Notes on Teaching - Speaking Activities in Classroom
-If your students talk Turkish instead of English in group work; Think about why they feel a need to speak Turkish instead of English.
-Do not start the lesson with a too general question. For instance, don’t ask them “What do you think about global warming?” or “Today we are talking about xxx, what do you think about it?” ➡️ Try a more specific question. Add your own thoughts about the topic and encourage them.
These are important when bringing up a topic:
- Interest
- Relevant knowledge
- Motivation
- Do they need it
- Do they have time to think
- Is the question specific, clear enough and well structured/framed
What should we do instead?
We should consider:
→ How can I make them be interested in the subject I’m talking about
- Lead in with an introduction & pre-task
- Select an interesting & specific topic
- Give thinking & planning time
- Provide clear instructions
- Frame the activity well
- Group work/pair work
- Avoid interruptions or immediate error corrections
Activity Example:
- Nominate a film for award winning, grupça belirlesinler, sonra filmi sunup tanıtım yapsınlar.
- Give them a budget and give them a catalogue, ask them to go on a shopping and buy whatever they bought, then they come to the board and show everyone what they bought.
-Grammar should be given in a context.
-Ask yourself if your students are able to personalize the topic or not.
-Speaking activities should focus on what they are personally interested in or usually talk about with their friends/family.
-Through personalized questions, reading-based speaking activities can go beyond the reading text.
-Engage your learners through an exciting context.
- Pre-speaking —> Give them an input (authentic materials can be used)
- While speaking —> Does the speaking focuses on accuracy or fluency?
- Post-speaking
